Dvoracek to Miss Entire Season

Last night, Vaughn McClure of the Chicago Tribune reported that Dusty Dvoracek, the Chicago Bears’ starting nose tackle, was hurt in last week’s game against the Giants. The injury occurred on his right knee, and an MRI would take place to look at the extent of the injury, despite Dvoracek’s insistence that he’d be fine.

Then, earlier, Brad Briggs from the Sun-Times stated that it looks like Dvoracek may miss the entire 2009 NFL season as a result of his injury from last weekend. It looks like he tore the ACL in his knee, and this would easily sideline him for the entire season.

My take on the Dusty’s situation: He is a hard working player, who has been hit hard with injuries. He hasn’t finished a season yet for the Bears. He missed his rookie season in 2006, after he had foot surgery.

In 2007, he played just one game before being sidelined for the entire season due to a torn ACL in the same knee. Then in 2008, he played three quarters of the season and was a valuable contributor to the team, but missed the rest of the year after tearing his bicep.

This might be the end of Dvoracek’s career here. There’s no doubt that he’s talented, but there will be considerable doubt as to how well he can bounce back from an injury like this. Not to mention the injury risk that he’s clearly established himself as now.

The former third round pick is on his last year of his contract. I don’t know if the Bears will want an injury prone player like Dusty on the team, you can’t count on him.

Too many players suffer from fates like this, and it’s a shame. A promising career may have reached its end here due to his high propensity to injury.

As for what happens from here, it looks like Anthony Adams and Marcus Harrison will split reps at the nose tackle position, and Matt Toeanina will fill Dusty’s shoes.
