Bulls and Celtics Fight for Arroyo

Earlier this year, we watched the early stages of a showdown building between the Celtics and the Bulls. The 2 teams competed during the 1st round of the postseason for an extraordinary playoff series, playing 7 overtimes in 7 showdowns, and the excitement was there.

It was a rivalry centered around guards. The Celts possessed Rajon Rondo, a young 2 , averaging just about a triple-double each night and carrying a Boston team depleted by injuries and forced to go tiny. The Bulls had Derrick Rose, in his rookie season, experiencing a crucial series in the early years of his career. A first timer surrounded with veterans, Rose played with poise out of his years.

Currently, 4 months have gone by, and the 2 organizations still maintain a rivalry based on point guards.

The guy in question is Carlos Arroyo. The 30-year-old career backup guard played eight years in the league between 2001 and 2008; he subsequently jumped ship and relocated to Israel, getting a one-season deal with Maccabi Tel Aviv. Now, after a year somewhere else, Arroyo wants to once again play in the NBA.

The Celtics are the plausible destination for Arroyo. The Celtics are presently devoid of a decent bench for Rondo at point guard — and following 2 years of acquiring one in the middle of the season (first Sam Cassell in , then Stephon Marbury this former year), they could essentially use a season-round answer. The franchise has reportedly agreed to provisions with Marquis Daniels, but Daniels is more of a swingman-type than a pure PG. He’s not quite the solution.

Arroyo is a worthy fit. He’s somewhat affordable, he plays hard on both ends of the court, and he would be more than content as a second-string on a great team. He’s done it before — he backed up Mark Jackson with the Jazz, Chauncey Billups with the Pistons, and Jameer Nelson in Orlando. He doesn’t require a starting gig to be pleased in the NBA — he will just get minutes whichever way he can acquire them.

Evidently Arroyo is in discussions with the Celtics regarding becoming the most recent second-string for Rondo.

Except, of course, the Bulls steal him away beforehand.
